We are seeking a dedicated Health & Safety Officer on behalf of our client. This role plays a vital part in fostering a culture where safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence are prioritised. The successful candidate will lead the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of Health & Safety (H&S) standards across multiple sites, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements while promoting a proactive safety culture.
The role is primarily based at the client’s headquarters in Tuam, Co. Galway, with regular travel to other locations as needed.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain the organisation’s Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Management System.
- Ensure full statutory compliance with all EHS legislation across sites in Ireland and the UK.
- Promote and embed a positive and proactive EHS culture throughout the organisation.
- Develop, implement, and review H&S policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Plan, coordinate, and carry out risk assessments, inspections, and audits.
- Oversee contractor and subcontractor compliance with internal safety requirements.
- Create engaging H&S training materials to support organisation-wide learning.
- Deliver induction training to new employees and act as a key point of contact for H&S queries.
- Deliver ongoing H&S training to employees to enhance awareness and competence.
- Liaise with authorities and regulatory bodies such as the HSA, HSE, Fire Department, and EPA.
- Manage chemical safety processes, including handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Ensure full compliance of lifting gear and equipment in line with legislative standards.
- Manage the procurement and control of H&S-related goods and services.
- Collate, analyse, and report EHS data to identify trends and drive improvements.
- Lead accident and incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Provide H&S input into tender documentation for new site projects.
- Support HR with administrative tasks, including policy updates and documentation for compliance or litigation.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Degree (Level 7 or higher) in Occupational Safety & Health or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role (desirable).
- QQI Manual Handling Instructor certification (advantageous).
- Occupational First Aid certification (desirable).
- Strong IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office and relevant H&S systems.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritise effectively.
